Sic Semper Draconis is dragon slaying music! It takes as its title a Latin phrase which means “thus always to dragons”. I first encountered the phrase in The Ashtown Burials, a series of books by N.D. Wilson, and then again in a blog post by author S.D. Smith. In that post S.D. Smith included this quotation by author G.K. Chesterton about the importance of stories:
“Fairy tales, then, are not responsible for producing in children fear, or any of the shapes of fear; fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already, because it is in the world already. Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.”

Sic Semper Draconis is a tribute to the power of stories and the long line of artists who recognize that though there is darkness in the world, it is no match for the light. It is dedicated to all the young percussionists who will perform it and it’s my prayer that if and when they encounter the “darkness of dragonkind” in their lives they would have the courage to pick up their metaphorical sword and start swingin’!
It is available now for purchase through Tapspace Publications.
